How trends can help you find your muse
"I DON'T SET TRENDS. I JUST FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE AND EXPLOIT THEM."
Trends are important cultural indicators that can be a great source of creative inspiration. Looking at past and current trends and thinking about the next big trend can help give ideas and keep you one creative step ahead of everyone else.
The Next Big Thing
Automobiles, Televisions, Personal Computers, Cell Phones
Have you ever wondered what the next big thing is going to be? What new thing is going to become a hit with the masses and change the world as we know it? Automobiles changed our landscape, television impacted the way we see the world and personal computers changed the way we did just about everything.
And then Cell Phones came along.
Ten Years ago, people actually had to remember phone numbers. Ten Years ago, stores did not find it necessary to post signs discouraging people from talking on their cell phones while conducting a transaction. Now, with the rising popularity of smart phones, who knows what the next ten years hold in store for us. Will people become even more intel-dependent on their machines? Will stores find it necessary to place signs discouraging people from updating their Facebook page while conducting business?
Speaking of Facebook…
Remember when it was all about MySpace? Remember before that and how you had to actually pay someone a visit in order to look at their vacation photos? You have to wonder what is going to replace Facebook and Twitter as the next big thing. Will it have something to do with the current 3D technology that is being developed?
Thinking of 3D…
Are 3D movies here to stay? Avatar was the biggest blockbuster ever, thanks in part to the role that new 3D technology played. Now, most new blockbusters are shown in 3D. Will this trend continue, or will people get sick of trying to keep those silly glasses on and demand that film makers focus on things like character and plot instead?
Where I am going with this rant…
All Ranting aside, knowing about the latest trends and thinking about what the next big thing is going to be can help put you on the path to find your muse. A trend is an important cultural indicator. Whether it’s a new technology, a shift in paradigm, or a new cultural movement, a new trend points to what society is now interested in and where it may be heading in the future. Being aware of the trends that are happening now and determining what new trends might show up later can help open your creative mind to new ideas and directions.
If you are a film maker, for example, you are going to need to be aware of the latest 3D trend and make a decision whether or not to incorporate it into your own movies. Thinking about the technology and how it could make your movies more or less compelling will not only help you make a decision on your own creative direction, it may also give you new ideas and inspirations for the stories you want to tell through film. Or, if you are a screenwriter, you are going to have to be aware of the smart phone trend and think about ways you could use them in your screenplay. You might find yourself coming up with new story ideas, or being able to write your way out of a tough spot thanks to this new trend.
Whatever field you may be working in, thinking about trends can help you find inspiration and new ideas. Builders can find more efficient construction methods, or pick up new design ideas to please their clients. Doctors can learn about the latest new health and fitness trends and gain new ideas on how to advise their patients. Next time you need new ideas, have a look at where things are heading and try to imagine what may be next.
