How staying curious can help you find a muse
"I HAVE NO SPECIAL TALENTS. I AM ONLY PASSIONATELY CURIOUS"
In order to find your muse, you might need to tap into your cat like curiosity. By exploring things a bit further and looking for the answers to questions that popup, you might find yourself taking new creative paths and discovering new ideas.
Like a Cat
“Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back”- Eugene O’Neill
You have to admire our feline friends. Being hunters, cats are infused with an endless amount of curiosity. There is no nook or cranny that they are not willing to explore no smell or sound that they will not investigate. While this might be chalked up to a cat’s predatory wiring, even the most well fed cat feels the need to look further into matters. Sure, this super curious nature had led to a few cat’s untimely demise, but it is also what probably makes them successful as a species.
“Curiosity about life and all its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people”- Leo Burnett
We could learn a lot from the cat in its insatiable thirst for wanting to find out more about something, especially when it comes to being creative. By allowing yourself to be curious and opening your mind to new questions and seeking answers for them, you allow yourself to explore creative new paths and find out new things that can help inspire you.
Examples on How to be the creative curious cat
Find out more
Next time you come across a subject in the news that makes you want to find out more, satisfy your inner feline and try to find out more about the subject to see if it leads you down any creative avenues. For example, you read a story about the comeback of a particular fashionable trend that you thought had disappeared way back in the Eighties. This sparks your curiosity and leads you to investigate the ebb and flow of fashionable trends through history and brings you down a new creative path and helps spur you to try a few other old trends that have been forgotten.
Take new paths
Another way to be a curious creative cat is to allow yourself the satisfaction of peaking around the next metaphorical corner to see what might lie behind it. For example, you are out walking your dog, and you come across a trail that you never took before. Thinking like a cat (do not let your dog find out) you decide to take that trial and find out where it leads. Next thing you know, you find yourself at a terrific overlook that would make a really nice panoramic picture.
Let something catch your eye
Another way to be like that cat and let curiosity feed your muse is to let things catch your eye. For example, you are bird watching and you spot a bird you had never seen before. You decide to look it up and realize that it is a bird that was once thought extinct in your neck of woods because of the loss of habitat. This leads you to a new environmental cause that you had previously never known existed.
