How a change in lifestyle can help you find your muse
Making new changes to your old lifestyle is a great way to branch out creatively and create a better canopy on which to catch the rays of ideas and inspiration. Next time you are looking for your muse, try changing the way you dress, what you listen to, or where you go at night and watch as new creative opportunities present themselves to you.
Goth, Grunge, Skater, Preppy,
Kids today can sure change their lifestyle at the drop of a hat. One day they are all about skate boards and wearing pants that hang to the ground then the next day they are using gel in their hair and shopping for cardigans as they enter into their new preppy phase. That’s youngsters for you, constantly shifting and changing as they explore different lifestyles to find out which one seems a best fit.
I think that it is great that kids do all this changing and adapting. All that exploration is great for creativity, allowing youth to gain experiences and perspectives that they otherwise would not have had if they decided just to pick one role early on in life and stick with it. These phases that kids go through allow them to branch out in more creative directions, creating a bigger canopy on which to capture the rays of inspiration.
But what about those of us who have already settled into a particular lifestyle? What about us older trees that are no longer a pliable sapling but old wood, shaped by the winds of life and incapable of branching out in a new direction? What can we do with our set of lifestyles that will help us create new shoots and help us expand our own creative canopy?
Just because you are not going through phases at the drop of a hat anymore does not mean that there is no longer an opportunity for you to adapt and change your lifestyle. There is always time for a bold new you and making a few bold changes to your lifestyle can be the first step towards new ideas and inspiration.
Here are some suggestions:
- Change your wardrobe
Have you always been a jeans and t-shirt person? Why not try going around dressed in a suit for a change? This might allow you the opportunity to see the world from the perspective of a business person as people you interact with treat you differently because of your more professional attire. Or, if you are a business man with a penchant for expensive Italian loafers, try walking around in a pair of sandals for a while and see if people’s reaction to you changes because of your casual attire.
- Change your music
Have a penchant for listening to classical on your way to work? Why not try listening to country music for a change and see if the different vibe the music brings you helps give a different creative perspective on that morning commute.
- Change the Venue
Instead of dressing up and going to the nightclub, try dressing down for a change and go bowling or vice versa. By changing up your nightlife and exploring other things to do, you might find yourself coming up with new creative ideas that were once eluding you.
These are just a few suggestions on what you can do to change up your lifestyle a little bit. By making an effort to dress a little differently, listen to different music, or do other things in your free time, you allow for new shoots of creativity to spring up and branch out, allowing for a better chance to catch all the rays of inspiration.
