How changing our habits can help us find our muse
Habits help define the way we do things and cope in times of stress. By taking a good look at our various routines and rituals and then making changes to them, we can then open up new portals of creativity and allow ourselves better access to our waiting muse.
Force of Habit
We like to call ourselves creatures of habit. We all have our own little way of doing things. Our own little rituals and routines that help us get through life and help us cope. Some of our habits, such as jogging every morning, are good habits that can keep us healthy and happy, while other habits, such as sneaking that morning cigarette after the jog, are not so good for us, but nonetheless part of the little rituals that we have developed over the years.
Habits help define the way that we do things.
Think about, for instance, how you do the laundry and all of the habits, both good and bad, that such a chore entails. If you have a habit of organizing everything by color but not by material, for example, you might end up with a shrunken surprise in the dryer as you dry you favorite black t- shirt on high heat with all of your socks. Now, if you were to take a look at all these laundry habits and try to do things differently such as first organizing things by type and material before sorting them into colors, you might find that doing so will lead to new laundering ideas that will undoubtedly result in better looking clothes and your favorite black t-shirt will still be wearable.
By examiningthe habits that come with our daily routines as well as our creative endeavors and changing them up bit, we might then be able to find our muse as we sort out the dirty clothes pile of your mind. Next time you see an opportunity to change things up or pick up a new (good) habit, try it out and watch how this little switch in your habits helps you find new paths to inspiration and ideas.
You could, for example, switch from exercising in the evening after work and instead, get up early and go through your exercise regime. You might find that the feeling of alertness that this gives you helps you perform better at your job and enables you to come up with new and better solutions to the problems that were plaguing you. Or, you could forgo the habit of getting that second espresso in the morning and find that the money you save each week is exactly the amount you need to start up you new online business venture.
By taking a look at our little routines and rituals and endeavoring to make changes, we allow for new opportunities for our muse to come in and pay us a visit. So, next time you see an opportunity to do so, change things up a bit and watch as new ideas and inspirations enter through the new opening that you create
