How exploring different topics can help you find your muse
MATHEMATICS, CURRENT MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES, HOG FUTURES. BECAUSE HE NEVER KNOWS WHEN THESE IDEAS MIGHT COME TOGETHER TO FORM A NEW IDEA. IT MAY HAPPEN SIX MINUTES LATER, OR SIX MONTHS, OR SIX YEARS. BUT HE HAS FAITH THAT IT WILL HAPPEN.”
They say that “variety is the spice of life” and this may especially be true for the life of your muse. A creative mind cannot thrive off of a singular inspirational source just as person will suffer malnutrition if they only ate peanut butter sandwiches. In order to find new sources of inspiration, try changing up what you are reading and studying and see if your muse may be hiding in a different subject.
Variety is the spice of a creative life
If all your kid wants to eat is peanut butter sandwiches, and you oblige them by stocking up on nothing but wonder bread and Jiffy, do not be surprised when the doctor tells you they are vitamin deficient. While there is nothing wrong with the occasional peanut butter sandwich, having peanut butter and only peanut butter day in and day out will eventually lead to malnutrition. You need to at the very least include some jelly along with a glass of milk in order to make it more complete. Better yet, you could convince your kid to try new and different foods to see if they like them and help them understand that importance of a varied diet.
Our minds can end up being a lot like that kid who only eats peanut butter sandwiches. If we end up feeding it the same information and examining the same topics day in and day out our minds will end up stagnating and suffering from inspirational malnutrition. Instead always reading the same newspaper, or rereading the same book over and over again, it is important that we feed our minds a variety of subjects so that it may get a more creatively balanced meal.
In this era of specialization, focusing on one subject has almost become the status quo. We find our focus becoming increasingly narrow and before we know it we end up in a creative canyon that is almost impossible to climb out of. While this may make us experts in a particular field, it does nothing for us when we find ourselves facing a creative challenge with a solution that lies outside our field of expertise. We become strongmen who lack the necessary flexibility it takes to yield power.
In order to be a flexible and creative thinker, it is important that you endeavor to pursue other topics of interest. You may think you only need peanut butter, but once you taste what else is out there, you will find that trying something different also has its rewards.
