How avoiding negative people can help you find your muse
“A NEW IDEA IS DELICATE. IT CAN BE KILLED BY A SNEER OR A YAWN; IT CAN BE STABBED TO DEATH BY A QUIP AND WORRIED TO DEATH BY A FROWN ON THE RIGHT MAN’S BROW.”
Being creative is tough, and negative people make it even tougher. In order to find your muse, you may need to avoid these naysayers as if they were flesh eating zombies. If you see one coming, turn around and run away before they are able to sew the seed of self doubt and rob you of your muse.
There are negatives amongst us. We all know who these people are. They are like vampire bats, swooping down from the rafters and latching onto to our unsuspecting muse, sucking it dry before it even has a snowball’s chance of inspiring us. They are like flesh eating zombies from space, deliberately chasing us determined to wear us down so they can devour whatever creative life force that is left within us. They are the people that want to “bring you back down to earth” or “knock you off your high horse”, and a thousand other clichéd euphemisms that they are likely to use to cover up their own self loathing.
They are monsters.
The best thing you can do when you come across a negative, is to turn around and run!
How to spot a negative
Since they do have a tendency to look like everyone else in the conference room or coffee shop, it can be a bit hard to spot a negative person at a distance. While some intuitive people can spot them right away, the rest of us non-clairvoyant types might have to actually interact with them before we see the monster that is hiding behind the smart looking suit.
If you find yourself:
- Constantly being interrupted so that you can be told why you are wrong
- Having your aspirations being seen as unattainable
- Being told that “you can’t” or “you shouldn’t”
- Walking away with the feeling that you should just give up on your muse
- Walking away feeling like a dumbass for even thinking it was possible.
Then you have most likely been talking to a negative person. Now that you know what you are dealing with, you know what to do if you want to keep your creative spirit intact.
Do not walk, run!
Do not try to reason with them, do not try to confront them, or even argue with them. This is a waste of your precious creative energy and these monsters are not worth it. Just turn your back to their creative sapping negative energy and politely run away. This is the best thing that you can do in order to find your muse. Creative inspiration dwells in the positive realm and negative people have the ability to repel it. When they are near, it is almost impossible to push through their negative energy field and find inspiration. There is only one thing that you can do.
