Muse on Exhibit
When I was a kid, the county fair was always the Big Summer event that everyone just had to go to. My father, being the type of person who he was (cheap), would forgo forking over his money for rides and gold fish game and instead, haul us though every single one of the exhibits that were on display. Pouting and whining about how we never got to go on the Gravitron or Zipper, we would follow him through stall after stall, hoping to at least get some cotton candy or a corn dog at the end of our tour.
Off we would go, looking at the fat prize winning pigs, laughing as the cows nonchalantly pooped all over the place, rubbing the noses of the more friendly horses and so on, finally making it to the final pavilion which featured the ribbon winners of all the various entries including horticulture, painting, wood working, pottery, quilting and so on. While many of these things were interesting to a kid like me, they could just not compete with the lure of dangerous spinning contraptions and games featuring ping pong balls and fish bowls.
When I got older and got myself a job so that I could finally fork over my own hard earned money to go on those rides that spun you around and to play those games that featured giant stuffed animals, I soon discovered that all these things succeeded in doing was making me both sick to my stomach and broke. It was then I discovered what my old man knew all along: the true value of the county fair was not in the rip off games or vomit inducing rides, but rather in all those different exhibitions that were on display.
Nowadays, being a bit older and perhaps a tad bit wiser, I never pass up on an opportunity to visit an exhibit or a local fair. I know not that when it comes to finding inspiration for my creative pursuits, these are the places where it is happening. Next time you are looking for ideas and inspiration for whatever your creative pursuit happens to be, why not try going to one of these events to see if they can help give you new ideas and creative goals.
