How traveling can help you find your muse
"CERTAINLY, TRAVEL IS MORE THAN THE SEEING OF SIGHTS; IT IS A CHANGE THAT GOES ON, DEEP AND PERMANENT, IN THE IDEAS OF LIVING."
Hitting the open road, or hopping on a plane and doing a little traveling can help open up your mind to new ideas and stoke the creative fires within. Whether it is around the globe or just across town: new sites and new people can be the catalyst for new creativity.
The open road
There is nothing like hitting the open road. Ever since I was a kid, I have loved traveling. Whether it was going across town or across the continent, setting off for parts unknown would fill me with excitement like I was some sort of adventurous hobbit leaving the Shire for the first time. Every journey was filled with the possibility of meeting new people, seeing different things and going on new adventures. Even today, all it takes is a nice road trip to get me giddy. Next month, in fact, we are planning to take a little trip and I cannot wait! Who knows what we might run into on our way there and back again.
One of the best ways to get those old creative juices flowing is to take a little trip and to open your mind to the possibility of new sights, sounds, people and adventures. By getting yourself out of your usual routine and going someplace else for a change, you open yourself to new ideas and perspectives. For example, taking a trip cross country to visit some distant relatives might expose you to a new landscape to paint, or new and interesting people to write about, or boarding a plane and going someplace exotic might give you a new idea for a product that is currently not found in your neck of the woods.
The secret to finding inspiration during your travels is to keep an open mind and to consider the journey as a whole and not just the destination. For example, if you get a layover in a strange new city and have some time to explore, use this time as an opportunity to get to know this new place that you happen to be stuck in. You just might find that new creative idea waiting for you in between your flights. Also, when you finally arrive at your destination, keep your mind open to any new and exciting adventures the place has to offer. For example, instead of sitting around in your hotel room and watching television, try going out and do some exploring and talk to the local people. You just might find some great new creative ideas waiting for you just around the corner that would have never come to you if you had not got yourself up and out.
