How find your muse by killing off bad ideas
“DEVELOP A BUILT-IN BULLSHIT DETECTOR”
Being able to kill the BS before it starts to fester and affect your creative output is a good way to find your true muse. Ask yourself tough questions regarding the path you are on and do not be afraid about starting over if your find out you are heading in the wrong direction. If you got this far on the wrong path, imagine how far you will get on the right one.
Know BS when you see it
Sometimes your muse is not hiding in that steaming pile of bad ideas you have sitting in front of you. Being able to recognize a project that is going nowhere and allowing yourself to kill it before it wastes more of your time will help you throw off the heavy yoke of poor ideas and free yourself to find your true muse
Everybody has come up with bad ideas, but the great minds do not let these bad ideas stop them from creating, instead they learn from them and continue their pursuit. The trick is to know when the project you are working on is going nowhere and allow yourself to walk away from it and pursue other avenues of creative advancement.
The best thing to have in these situations is a good BS detector. You need to realize when you are hanging on to something for all the wrong reasons. You need to ask yourself whether what you are doing is a good fit for what are trying to accomplish. Look at the project and allow yourself to be critical.
Face the truth and ask yourself some tough questions:
- Is this the right path?
- Why did I choose this path?
- Why am I sticking on it?
- What are my other choices?
Many people like to stick to their original bad ideas because they are too embarrassed to admit that they were wrong. A sense of false pride consumes them, keeping them from facing the truth as they convince themselves that they are on the right path. Like a poor fellow with a horrible comb over, they need to look themselves in the mirror and choose a different path and face the truth. Be brave, be proud, be bald.
