How giving a 110% can help you find your muse
In order to catch your muse, you are going to give more and then some into the creative chase. If you want to truly find inspiration you need to leave it all on the creative playing field saving nothing for the trip home.
Give it your all and then some
“You give 100 percent in the first half of the game, and if that isn’t enough in the second half you give what’s left.”- Yogi Berra
Two boys, one slight, one athletic dare each other to swim across a vast lake. As they set out on their swim, the more athletic boy is confident they he will eventually wear out his weaker friend. Yet, as they get into deeper water, his frail competitor swims with determination, matching the other boy stroke for stroke. The athlete begins to tire, but continues, not wanting to believe that this weaker boy can actually outswim him. Yet, the other boy keeps up even starts to outpace the bigger, stronger, faster boy. Exasperated and worried that he might not have anything left to get back, the Athlete gives up and starts heading back.
“How did you do it?” He asks his friend later when the reach the shore.”How did you beat me?”
“I beat you, because I saved nothing for the swim back,” was the frail friend’s response.
Coaches are always telling their players to leave it all on the field, to give 110%. Now, this might sound scientifically impossible, but usually the players know what their coaches are asking of them. Even if we are giving all we got, we still hold a little back. In other words, we keep a little something in our reserve tank to make sure we get back home. In order to win the big game, we need to give everything we have and more. We cannot hold anything back.
Leave nothing for the journey back.
When you are pursuing your muse, the only way you will catch is if you go after it with everything you have within yourself. Even if you see yourself as less gifted than some other creative types, if you pursue your ideas with the grim determination of a swimmer who saves nothing for the swim home, you will find yourself catching your inspiration and surpassing those you thought had more talent and potential.
